What To Do When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

By Emily Mattice on February 11, 2016

Being overwhelmed seems almost essential nowadays. It has become an everyday feeling, and dread. The littlest things can overwhelm us, and it takes time to calm down and realize that what we’re worrying about may not be such a big thing after all.

Being overwhelmed with various things and feeling overly stressed is normal in this day and age, considering all of the obligations, responsibilities, and challenges that we face and pursue. Although being overly committed and worried can be a bad thing, some good can come out of it. Here are some things to do when you’re feeling as though life is getting to be a little much.

1. Take a deep breath, and actually mean it.

I know that when I’m freaking out about being too busy, people always tell me to “take a deep breath.” Well, easier said than done. I used to hate that remark, and found that it only made things worse, but I’ve recently realized differently. If you take a deep breath, and actually feel and mean it, you will feel better after … guaranteed. This is a chance for you to realize negative thoughts and energy, and it will help in the long run.

2. Be with friends.

No matter what you’re overwhelmed by, I guarantee that spending some time with your friends or family will ease your worries. Sometimes all you need is a laugh, a smile, or a positive conversation to change your mood. Your friends will most likely relate to some of your stresses, and you can work together to figure things out. Something as simple as just talking to someone you love can change your mindset towards things, so make sure to make some time for that when feeling like you have time for nothing at all.

3. Exercise.

I know that for me, exercising is a key stress reliever. When I’m overwhelmed, I go running or to the gym to sweat out all my worries … and it works. I leave feeling refreshed and clear minded, no matter how long I work out. This is something multiple scholars recommend as well, just in case you don’t believe me.

4. Don’t procrastinate.

Most of the time, being overwhelmed is a result of us being too busy, and sometimes procrastinating. In order to help yourself in the future, try your best to knock out your most tedious of tasks first. This will take some weight off of your shoulders, and make you feel slightly more relieved than before.

Although there are probably a million more things to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed, these are the ones that help me most, and that could potentially help you too. You just have to find the method that works best for yourself, and stick to it when you’re freaking out. Just remember, in the long run, everything will be okay!
